Community Partners for Bushfire Relief

News

The start of 2020 was overwhelming for most Australians as they helplessly watched hundreds of bushfires tear across the country. This included the team from MAD Youth, who could feel the distant effects of the bushfires in the smokey haze that engulfed Melbourne, yet felt disempowered to actually make a difference.

Fortunately the enterprising team at Footscray Finds decided to dedicate their January Market to fundraising for the Bushfire Appeal, and with the help of Seddon Community Bank, were able to connect with MAD Youth to run a fundraising BBQ and Boomerang Bags to organise a sewing bee to make joey pouches for injured animals.

The response on the day was overwhelming with sewers arriving from all over Melbourne, sewing machines in hand. Amy for Boomerang Bags – Maribyrnong did an outstanding job co-ordinating sewers, helpers and the specifics of patterns and fabric to make 108 large joey bags on the day. Slice Girls West generously donated coffee and snacks to keep the team energised.

At the same time, MAD Youth kept the BBQ sizzling to raised $646.60 for the Bendigo Bank Bushfire Relief Appeal. Co-ordinated with only a few days notice, it was outstanding to see such an amazing community effort which really did make a difference.
